Make a Difference Day

Philoptochos Chapters Across the Country

Honor Archbishop Demetrios

and Make A Difference with Children

At its May 2015 meeting, the National Board adopted a cross-generational initiative to honor His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios on the occasion of his Nameday on October 26. In conjunction with Make a Difference Day, which occurs each year in late October, chapters across the US were encouraged to sponsor projects involving the children in their parishes in “acts of kindness” in order to teach our youth about giving back to their communities and to directly involve them in philanthropy. Projects included thank you cards to veterans, get well cards to patients in hospitals, personal care kits for the homeless, canned food drives, service to senior citizens, etc.

Sewing for Charity: Group Delivers Dresses to Underprivileged Girls Across the World

For the past 4 years, St. Basil's Philoptochos Society in Chicago has hosted a sewing event that provides dresses for underprivileged girls in Third World countries.  It is a Make a Difference Day initiative.  The local NBC affiliate in Chicago ran a human interest piece on this project.  It is a wonderful event that brings women together from not only the St. Basil chapter but other chapters as well, and the piece includes brief remarks from our Bishop Demetrios of Mokissos.  Click here.

From OCMC: On Donating Gently Used Icons

We are extremely grateful to the Philoptochos Society for this effort as part of Make A Difference Day, as well as your tireless commitment to sharing the Faith through the ministries of the Orthodox Christian Mission Center (OCMC). These contributions will be especially appreciated in places like Guatemala and Indonesia, where the Orthodox faithful have little access to such resources because of their remote locations.

All icons that ...OCMC will receive should be wood-mounted and in good condition, without tears, scratches, fading, writing on the back, etc. Unfortunately we cannot accept icons that have glass, are mounted on materials other than wood, or paper icons that are not mounted, because they are too easily damaged during shipping.

Icons may be sent to OCMC, attn: Markella, at 220 Mason Manatee Way, Saint Augustine, FL 32086. Please contact Markella Balasis, SAMP/Agape Coordinator, at (877)-463-6784 ext. 163 or markella@ocmc.org with any questions or for further information.
