Family Caregiving
Our Community's Journey to Understanding, Compassion, and Hope

There are 53 million unpaid family caregivers currently in the United States caring for a loved one of any age who is elderly, physically or developmentally disabled, or suffering from a life-threatening condition. Traditionally, family caregivers are women, some of whom are in the ‘sandwich generation.’ They provide over 25 hours of care per week, typically for four to five years, and on average their out-of-pocket costs annually total over $7,200 on household, medical and other costs related to caring for their loved one.

Today, a significant number of Philoptochos members are or were caregivers, and others likely will become one. As more and more people are living longer, others will need caregiving themselves in the future. Because there is no “playbook” or “blueprint” for caregiving, we present this program because we believe that information leading to action is power.

Perfect Together!
National Philoptochos' 4th of July Diakonia Project with YAL

The National Philoptochos Convention culminated in a remarkable display of community service and intergenerational collaboration as Philoptochos and the Young Adult League (YAL) united for the Diakonia Project. This “syndiakonia” (joint-Diakonia) benefited Your Safe Place and San Diego Rescue Mission, two exceptional programs in San Diego.

On July 4th, Philoptochos and YAL delegates assembled 1,500 care packages for survivors of human trafficking, domestic violence, abuse, and homelessness. This hands-on initiative highlighted Philoptochos’ unwavering commitment to charitable action and dedication to nurturing connections with the next generation. Members of Philoptochos demonstrated deep mentorship and kinship with YAL participants, who shared the focus on aiding those in need.

The partnership between Philoptochos and YAL extends beyond this project, aiming to forge a lasting connection between our church’s various ministries. This collaboration strengthens our community outreach and enhances all involved’s spiritual and personal growth. Looking ahead, National Philoptochos eagerly anticipates continued collaboration with YAL, recognizing its role in shaping the future of philanthropy within the church and expanding the Army of Agape.

By embracing the past, present, and future, Philoptochos reaffirms its commitment to serving communities and supporting those in need. Through ongoing collaboration with YAL and other community partners, we strive to broaden our impact and uphold our mission of compassion and service. In Christ, We are One!
