Dionisia Ferraro
Sixth National Philoptochos President, 1986 – 1990
Mrs. Dionisia Ferraro of Huntington, NY, was National President of the Greek Orthodox Ladies Philoptochos Society for two terms, from 1986-1990.
Under the leadership of Mrs. Ferraro, a true visionary, the Philoptochos Society not only continued to expand its philanthropic outreach, but embarked on several innovative programs designed to make the society a vehicle for all Greek Orthodox women to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
During the four years of her presidency, Mrs. Ferraro traveled across the United States, Canada and Europe, attending conferences, official Metropolis Philoptochos meetings, regional meetings, and numerous events as an honored guest. Her travels had also taken her to Europe, Asia and South America where she had represented the Philoptochos Society.
Fifth National Philoptochos President, 1982 – 1986
As a result of her many travels, the Society experienced substantial growth. New Chapters were organized, dormant Chapters were reawakened, and revenues were generated for many National events. A significant increase in membership was also realized under her leadership.
One of the most significant accomplishments of her presidency was the expansion and development of the Philoptochos ministry, to address the major social problems of our time. Mrs. Ferraro was instrumental in advocating and affecting a bona fide Social Work office that flourished and grew. Through her efforts Philoptochos acquired a professional social worker and two assistants to expedite such ministry. Bearing the name Social Welfare Services, these programs morally, emotionally and financially aided the fight against: Domestic Violence, Pornography, Suicide and Substance Abuse.
Also established were additional programs which sought to emotionally and monetarily assist the homeless, aged, mentally ill and disabled as well as AIDS, cardiac and cancer patients.
Mrs. Ferraro passed away February, 2010. May her memory be eternal.
